Fresh Takes: Gurren Lagann Episode 12 Review!
Ah, the beach episode. A time-honored anime tradition. A time for the cast of our favorite shows and games to relax, let their hair down, put on their swimwear, and engage in some audience-pleasing fanservice. And thus, we come to episode 12 of Gurren Lagann, entitled “Yoko, Will You Do Me a Favor?” Mike and Brock are back with their Fresh Takes on the episode. Check it out below!
So I must say, my heart goes out to my girl Yoko in this episode. She gets schooled by Nia, which was crazy. I know people are crazy about Nia, and I understand why, but I love Yoko. Like, a lot more. Regardless, I adore this episode because of all the sight gags and humor on display here. Dai-Gurren lobs his “depth charges” willy-nilly at the enemies who show up midway through the episode, and of course, there’s the mighty oar that Leeron creates as a “special modification.” I won’t lie, I died laughing.
It’s okay, Yoko. I still love ya.
Oh, something I neglected to mention is the fact that Adiane is the big bad here, and she’s great, as always. I like that this show isn’t afraid to shift the pieces on the board and that people aren’t necessarily safe. That’s the sign of a brave series, and smart writing, and we need more of that.
