We have arrived at the series finale of Gurren Lagann, and it is glorious! Join Brock and Mike as they go on a final journey of self-discovery and victory as Simon and company vanquish the Anti-Spiral forces and rescue Nia! Or is it that simple? Let’s find out in the latest episode of Fresh Takes!
As Team Dai-Gurren and the Anti-Spirals duel in multidimensional nexus, Simon rescues Nia and the two of them join forces with the others in piloting the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, the ultimate form of our titular mecha. Both the GL and the Anti-Spiral’s own mech suit are now literally the size of galaxies, and they fight amongst the stars, throwing universes at each other. It’s quite the spectacle.
Back on Earth, Rossiu and the others left behind witness the showdown, and behold Simon’s power. Even Lordgenome, who spent the entirety of the first season as Simon’s nemesis, has evolved, gaining a temporary body in order for him to participate in the final battle. It’s amazing that even he has the opportunity to develop as a character over the course of the season.
While it’s slightly bittersweet to say goodbye to the show, Gurren Lagann has become a personal favorite, and I thank Brock and Mike for introducing me to a show that is more than just another mecha action series.
