Gurren Lagann ep. 25, "I Accept Your Last Wish" Review - Fresh Takes #24

March 30, 2021 by Neoplasmic in Animation, Fresh Takes, Videos

As the Super Galaxy Dai-Gurren sinks into a vast “space-ocean,” Anti-Spiral forces attempt to push it down even further into the depths of the sea. Faced with overwhelming odds, Kittan and Yoko decide to go out one last time to save the ship, while Simon and Viral attempt to power up its engines for transformation. It’s one last gasp for Team Dai-Gurren, and Brock and Mike are here to discuss it in the latest Fresh Takes!

Kittan and Yoko get some truly memorable moments in this episode, which I loved. It struck me as I watched just how mature and developed their characters have become, and it wasn’t done in a flashy way. Some very subtle background character arcs have happened, and we barely knew it! Of course, Yoko had her showcase episode, which I also really liked, but Kittan has grown into a worthy leader, and it’s amazing to see him come into his own here.

Meanwhile, the Anti-Spiral forces reveal that the “space ocean” is actually the graveyard of the past Spiral races who have fought against them: the Galactic Spiral Abyss, powered by something called the Death Spiral Machine, which is keeping them trapped in the depths of the Abyss. An enraged Simon tells them to strike at the Machine’s throat and destroy it, but the success of their new task is in doubt. Until, that is, the least likely of circumstances occurs. Simon’s pet, Boota, the pig-mole who’s followed him since the beginning of the series, has been secretly storing up a great amount of spiral power, and unleashes it in order to save Simon and Viral. Turns out even the tiniest creature has a role to play in this story.

Later, after their first missile strike against the Anti-Spirals is unsuccessful, Kittan decides to strap one of Simon’s drills on to his mecha, the King Kittan, in order to ram it straight into the Death Spiral Machine. Understanding that it’s a suicide mission, Kittan kisses Yoko, who then embraces him one final time. Luckily, Kittan’s sacrifice is not in vain, as his attack destroys the Death Machine and enables Simon and Viral (and Boota) to transform the Super Galaxy Dai-Gurren into the awe-inspiring Super Galaxy Gurren Lagann!

And thus concludes the 25th episode of this amazing anime series! Thank you for watching and checking out our recap here, and stay tuned for more Fresh Takes!
