Welcome to Pixar Looney Camp! - Renegade Animation #9

January 31, 2021 by Neoplasmic in Animation, Renegade Animation

Welcome once again to another installment of Renegade Animation, featuring the Captain (Mike) and the Guru (Cameron) bringing up all the news and views animation fans could want! Join our dynamic duo as they tackle the new season of Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous on Netflix, share their take on Pixar Popcorn, and comment on a new batch of Looney Tunes cartoons on HBO Max!

First up, the news. As Cameron says on the show, Paramount Animation has optioned the new series C.O.S.M.O.S. by Tom Wheeler, creator of Puss in Boots and the Netflix series, Cursed. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the series will be an adaptation of Wheeler’s upcoming children’s adventure book series and will be adapted by Wheeler himself. So if you’re a fan of animated weird science fiction, this one should be intriguing!

Epic, the developer behind the Unreal titles and their eponymous game engine (what the hell is a Fortnite? I’ve never heard of it. /sarcasm) have licensed said engine to the animation studio Hook Up, as they begin work on a new animated film called Gilgamesh. According to the Verge, “Gilgamesh is inspired by the mythological hero of the same name and follows its titular character on a mission to obtain immortality. Argentinian filmmaker Tomás Lipgot is set to direct.” Sounds interesting, but unfortunately, Cam and Mike are right about this one. Something about the designs look very Fortnite-y and a little off. Hopefully they’ll have time to iron out the kinks before Gilgamesh releases.

Note: The duo also covered the possible nominees for the Oscars’ Best Animated Film category in this episode, which is way too detailed to recount here. Suffice it to say, they do a great job of breaking it down in the podcast!

Alright, folks, now on to the reviews. First, we have Pixar Popcorn, a new Disney+ original which features ten short films starring popular characters from Pixar’s films in “all-new, bite-sized stories” from Pixar’s talented animators and filmmakers, to paraphrase the official synopsis. Here’s Mike with his bite-sized take:

“Pixar Popcorn is a fun, breezy series of shorts set in the world of all your favorite Pixar films. It’s 10 shorts total, each one no longer than 2 minutes, and are basically an excuse for the animators and directors to test their skills. Still, they come highly recommended.”
— The Captain with his short take on the new Pixar shorts.

Next up is the second batch of Looney Tunes Cartoons on HBO Max, and here’s our official review from Mike:

“A new batch of Looney Tunes Cartoons premiered on HBO Max, and they’re pretty damn good! One thing that sets these new shorts apart from other attempts at modernizing these characters is how dark they’re willing to go with some of these gags, particularly with the Tweety Bird and Porky & Daffy segments.”
— The Captain goes a little looney with Tweety, Porky, and Daffy!

Finally, we have a new season of Netflix’s hit show, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous. Here’s Mike once again with our official word:

“Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous Season 2 is a VAST improvement over the first! Now that we’ve gotten to know the main characters and we understand what’s at stake, it’s easier to get invested in the story. It feels more epic, knowing where this series fits in the timeline, and a couple of new characters introduced add a whole new set of obstacles for our heroes to face. If you’ve been hesitant about checking out the series before, now is a great time to start!”
— The Captain is far happier with this Camp! Hope the series continues to improve!

That is it for another edition of the Renegade Animation podcast! We hope you enjoyed it, and stay tooned for another episode next week! Until then, be safe and take care of yourselves, Renegades!
