Smurfing Around in Jujutsu Kaisen's Hidden Inventory - Renegade Animation #190
In this episode, Captain Kaye and the Animation Guru discuss the newest on screen iteration of the Smurfs, as well as the compilation film Jujutsu Kaisen: Hidden Inventory/Premature Death, and by extension, Season 2 of the anime!
What’s going on, everyone? This is your Captain speaking, alongside my esteemed co-host, the Animation Guru! We are excited to share this episode, mostly because we finally get to talk about Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen, using the compilation film Hidden Inventory/Premature Death as the springboard. Please tune into the podcast to hear the full discussion!
Smurfs
I’m gonna cut right to the chase, this movie is bad. Not necessarily the worst movie of all time, and not even the worst Smurfs movie of all time, but it is hanging around the bottom of my 2025 list. I don’t like to judge movies based solely on the marketing, but this movie’s trailers were so bad that it would have been DOA no matter what. Outside of a few shining moments, from the great character designs to a fantastic vocal performance from JP Karliak pulling double duty as the evil wizard brothers Gargamel and Razamel, I cannot recommend this one.
“Smurfs: A film that wants to be this magical Rihanna-focused experience shouldn’t hide the fact that James Corden is the actual lead character. This movie has very little magic and way too much corporate-nonsense to be anything other than a waste of time.“ The Animation Guru
Jujutsu Kaisen: Season 2
To be honest, the only reason we’re getting to this season as late as we are is because GKids only recently released the Hidden Inventory/Premature Death arc in theaters. Nevertheless, I’m glad to have finally gotten caught up with this series, because season 2 was phenomenal! Surprising absolutely nobody, Satoru Gojo quickly became one of my favorite characters in the series, and seeing him and Sugoru Geto as teenagers at Jujutsu High is a lot of fun. It’s also a great villain origin story for Geto, as we see what drove him and Gojo apart. As for the rest of the second season, the Shibuya Incident is chock full of intense action sequences, plenty of nightmare fuel imagery, and a handful of shocking twists and turns (at least for those who haven’t read the manga).
“Jujutsu Kaisen S2/compilation movie: while the release of the compilation movie only helps to provide fans with something while season 3 is in the works, it also highlights the true strength and powerful story that this franchise offers. With its focus on the tragic fallout between our two leads, the rest of season 2 offers high octane action and thrills that will leave you breathless.“ -Animation Guru
