Indie Spotlight #1: Mechwest
Do you like Westerns? Do you like robots? How about both, in this 3D animated steampunk adventure created by Dave Gallagher for AnimSchool Studios. The only other notable indie pilot that utilized CG animation as effortlessly as this one was The Amazing Digital Circus, and I’m equally impressed by both. This first episode has a solid cast of likable characters, and I’m simply fascinated to learn more about the world in which these humans and mechs co-exist. As of this writing, episode 2 has been fully funded, and is aiming for a Q4 2024 release!
Indie Spotlight #2: Port by the Sea
Now here’s a nautical adventure that would fit nicely alongside other modern Cartoon Network classics from the 2010’s-present. Port by the Sea was created by Georden Whitman, and follows two kids, Port and Umi, and their pet crab Jolly Roger, as they attempt to find fallen pieces of a broken moon before an ancient deity can flood the world in ocean. This is another rock solid introduction to the story and characters, and I’m looking forward to where things go from here. If you wish to support this series, you can donate to their Ko-fi page here.
Jellystone Season 3
It’s been a minute since the last time we spoke about this series, but C.H. Greenblatt and the entire cast and crew haven’t lost their touch. In fact, I’d argue that Season 3 takes everything we’ve loved about the first two seasons of Jellystone, and pushed the envelope even further.

The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy
Created by Cirocco Dunlap, The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy is another great example of Prime Video’s ever expanding adult animated roster. It combines the charm, wit and emotionally grounded character drama of shows like Scrubs or Grey’s Anatomy with the pulpy sci-fi creativity of Futurama. The voice cast is great, led by Keke Palmer and Stephanie Hsu as Dr. Klak and Dr. Sleech, with additional voices provided by Maya Rudolph, Natasha Lyonne, Kieran Culkan, and Sam Smith.
