Gurren Lagann Episode 13 Review - Fresh Takes #13
Welcome to another episode of Fresh Takes, featuring our anime-lovin’ dynamic duo, Mike and Brock! It’s another slobber-knocker of an episode as they recap Gurren Lagann episode 13, “Eat Up, Everyone,” in which Nia finally finds her purpose on the Dai-Gurren, and Yoko gets wounded in the epic battle between Simon and Viral that is the centerpiece of the episode! Buckle up, folks, ‘cause we got us some Fresh Takes to serve up!
Now, one of the things I really like about Gurren Lagann as a series is that the big, epic, giant robo-mecha fight sequences are basically the cherries on top of an episodic character drama. The most important thing in the action scenes, apart from Simon proving himself to Yoko by protecting her when she gets hurt, is the fact that Viral believes that he’s still fighting Kamina this whole time. We know this isn’t true, so when Viral finds out, his sense of shame and rage completely overtakes him and allows Simon and Team Dai-Gurren to conquer their enemies yet again. It’s extremely smart writing and brilliant execution on the part of Gainax. Also, Yoko continues to be incredible, and Nia becoming the team’s chef is hilarious and completely fits her character. I’m really enjoying this show and am so glad we’re featuring it here on Renegade Pop Culture!
