Gurren Lagann Episode 14 Review - Fresh Takes #14

January 03, 2021 by Neoplasmic in Animation, Fresh Takes, Videos, TV

Happy 2021 and welcome to another installment of Brock and Mike’s Fresh Takes! Today we have a look at episode 14 of Gurren Lagann, “Well Met, Everyone,” in which Simon and the Dai-Gurren take on two of the enemy’s battleships, Dai-Gunsen and Dai-Gundo! As Cytomander and his mighty vessel throws everything they have at Team Dai-Gurren, Guame plans his own counter-attack. Will Simon and the others be able to withstand the power of the Spiral? Let’s find out!

After a short prologue scene in which Simon visits Kamina’s final resting place (bravo to the writers for including a quiet moment before the storm of combat that follows), we discover that it’s been a month since Cytomander’s previous attack on Dai-Gurren. Everyone has settled into their respective roles on the team, especially with Nia as the cook and Yoko as the mom/matriarch of the group. Which I personally find hilarious.

The episode is pretty much one long battle sequence that still contains some great character moments throughout. Leeron is someone I haven’t mentioned much, but I do love his exasperation with the rest of the team and Steve Blum’s performance is one of the best and most unique things he’s ever done. I really enjoy his take on the character and can’t wait to see where he ends up as the story moves along.

Gainax once again delivers some staggeringly awesome moments with the combat and animation. I love the little SD (super-deformed) touches they add to certain scenes. Really highlights the moments of levity on screen. The music in this episode is also top-notch and very cool! I haven’t mentioned the soundtrack in these notes very often, but it’s a part of the show as much as the voice acting and action sequences are. The mixture of rock and a bit of orchestral scoring with hip hop and rap influences is a delightful fusion, and I’m loving the way it matches up with the intense combat on screen!

The more I watch Gurren Lagann, the more I appreciate it and enjoy it! I was skeptical at first, as anime can sometimes be a bit too over the top for me to really glom onto it, but Brock and Mike were spot on when they recommended that I watch along with them as they release these Fresh Takes! Please enjoy their video, and let us know how we’re doing in the comments below! What did you think of episode 14 of the show? Do you agree with Mike and Brock’s review? Let us know! And be safe out there, Renegades!
