Gurren Lagann ep. 17, "You Don't Know Anything" - Fresh Takes #16
On this exciting episode of Fresh Takes… OMG, we skipped the recap episode, which was pretty cool, but it’s stuff you astute anime fans already know! So, seven years after the fall of Lordgenome, Simon, Nia, and the entire Dai-Gurren crew have now established Kamina City, the capitol city of humankind, where everyone seems to be living idyllic lives, but the spectre of Lordgenome’s warning to Simon hangs over like a dark cloud. Oh, the drama! Let’s get to it with Brock and Mike’s commentary.
With the war seemingly over, Simon, Yoko, Nia, Rossiu, Leeron, and the other members of Team Dai-Gurren are now left with the far more tedious task of managing a thriving and technologically advanced city. We’re talkin’ skyscrapers, flying cars, the whole kit ‘n’ kaboodle, and all built within seven years! Surely this means that Simon and his right hand, Rossiu, have created a vast, peaceful utopia where nothing goes wrong and the rest of the series is basically a Sim City retread. Right?
In the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger in Commando: “Wrong!” As Lordgenome warned Simon while he stood with a gaping hole in his chest, a new enemy mecha appeared, with no pilot and an endless array of explosives. Oh, and in the middle of all this was Nia, who apparently has been a sleeper agent for a new group of Anti-Spiral entities this entire time! And she made her heel turn right after Simon proposed to her! Can you imagine that?
Surely this cannot stand! Simon and Rossiu will find a way to rescue Nia and the world will be set right again! After all, humanity can conquer anything that stands in its way!
Can’t it?
