Let's Gush About Asterix and Obelix - Renegade Animation #191
In this episode, Captain Kaye and the Animation Guru discuss Asterix and Obelix: The Big Fight, based on the French comic series by by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo!
What’s going on, everyone? This is your Captain speaking, alongside my esteemed co-host, the Animation Guru! I promise it’s only a coincidence that this is the second episode in a row where we happen to be talking about an adaptation of a classic French comic series. René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo debuted their titular character in the pages of Pilote in October 1959, roughly one year after the introduction of the Smurfs in 1958. So, without further ado, please tune into the podcast to hear the full discussion!
Asterix and Obelix: The Big Fight
For anyone who isn’t all that familiar with the comic, or the several animated films that have come before this, I would say that Asterix and Obelix: The Big Fight is a good introduction to these characters for a wider audience. Though there are many pop culture references and modern social commentary sprinkled throughout these 5 episodes, the comedy remains largely character focused, from the silliest puns for names, to classic Looney Tunes-esque slapstick. There’s a reason why this character has endured for so many years, and I hope we get to see more in the near future!
“While other nostalgic franchises try to stay up to date and fail, Asterix and Obelix found a way to stay fresh and exciting all the while keeping the original charm and appeal of the franchise in place. The Big Fight has a few flaws like some forgettable villains and a conflict that could have been handled better, but its focus on comedy, commentary about authoritarian rule, and vibrant action make for a fun limited series worth checking out.“ -The Animation Guru
